[L16.3] Al Kouther vs Sainsbury's

Sainsbury's 'Falafel & Humous Wrap' was the lowest ranked supermarket qualifier from the preliminary heats and found itself pita-ed up against falafel heavyweight Al Kouther. Maybe it ran scared because as it wasn't to be seen on any of the shelves of the three local Sainsbury's stores in the area (Farringdon Road, Clerkenwell Road, Fetter Lane). We didn't want to let this no-show spoil our day so we bought the ingredients separately and made our own.

In case you don't believe us, here is evidence of the lack of appearance:

Now we've eaten their wrap before and it wasn't great so can't think that it sells out so early every day, especially given the proximity to the falafel furlong so can only assume that the Sainsbury's stores in the area are consistently poor at stocking their shelves.

So we bought a baguette (makes a change from their tortillas) - 50p, a pack of 12 falafels - £2.50 and a pot of Moroccan style hummus - £1.35 and then assembled. We couldn't be bothered to faff about with salad but whilst we're on the subject of money, it's worth pointing out that this is the cheapest wrap of the tournament at £2.17 each. However the positives pretty much stop there, it was bloody horrible. We can't fully blame Sainsbury's for that fact but they did drive us to this.

The DIY Sainsbury's effort was far too heavy and could have done with some salad to de-beige it and lighten things up a bit. It scored full marks for quantity as it was genuinely a struggle to get through all these carbs. There weren't many positives to take away from this 'wrap' but the hummus was well spiced with cumin and other less dominant middle eastern flavours. Not a great shopping experience was had whilst in store - big slow queue and staff that let people push in front of said big slow queue.

Then it came to Al Kouther. We were massively impressed with their wrap when we visited them back in April and today wasn't any different. No other shop on Leather Lane comes close to the number of different ingredients included in the wrap, we noted tabbouleh, white cabbage, lettuce, red cabbage, hummus, 3 falafels, pickles, cucumber, tomato, chilli sauce.

The wrap was very nice indeed. Big thumbs up for the parsley in the tabbouleh but thumbs down for the fluffiness of the falafels, these could have done with being a bit fresher and crispier. Price was straight down the middle at £3 earning half marks in that category. The staff there are friendly and quick and as there wasn't much of a queue we were out of the door within minutes.

Not much of a contest really, Al Kouther storm into the quarter finals where they'll be up against either Mediterranean Food Bar (Mediterranean Wrap) or Pret a Manger.

Winner: Al Kouther

Al Kouther can be found at 22 Leather Lane.
Sainsbury's can be found at 17-23 Farringdon Road.
